ABOUT EPISODE
From Basketball Dreams to Track Sensation:
Karmiah's journey into track and field started somewhat unexpectedly. Originally aspiring to excel in basketball, she was persuaded by a friend to give track a try during her eighth-grade year. Encouraged by her grandfather, who had a history in the sport, Karmiah quickly discovered her natural talent. "I was doing it with very little experience but doing it well," she recalls. This early success led to a more serious commitment, and the rest, as they say, is history.
High School Highlights and Early Success:
Attending Palm Beach Central in Florida, Karmiah's high school track career was marked by significant achievements. Her rapid improvement and ability to compete at high-level meets, including the Nike Elite Training Camp, showcased her potential. "Being around people who had been running since before middle school and still achieving high levels kept me confident," Karmiah shares, reflecting on her high school experiences.
The College Transition: Florida State to Kentucky:
Karmiah initially chose Florida State University (FSU), influenced by her AAU coach's history with the institution and her desire to stay in Florida. However, her time at FSU made her realize the importance of a supportive environment and personal fit. This led to her transfer to the University of Kentucky, where she found a more nurturing and personalized experience. "My coach knows me mentally, physically, spiritually," she says, emphasizing the holistic support she receives at Kentucky.
Preparing for SEC Championships:
As she gears up for the SEC Championships, Karmiah's focus is on remaining poised and controlled. She attributes much of her success to her training regimen at Kentucky, particularly a workout known as "133s," which helps her maintain form and speed under fatigue. "Anybody can run when they're not tired, but who can do it while they're fatigued?" she asks, highlighting the importance of resilience.
Balancing Academics and Athletics:
Transitioning from FSU to Kentucky also brought improvements in her academic support and mental health. Karmiah notes that better academic resources and a healthier mental state have made it easier to juggle her dual responsibilities as a student-athlete. "When my mental health started to get into a healthier spot, I started to see that juggling my academics and athletics was pretty easy," she explains.
Motivation and Legacy:
A major source of Karmiah's motivation is the memory of her late grandfather, who played a pivotal role in her early track career. His passing two years ago has only strengthened her resolve to succeed and make him proud. "I know what he wanted for me, and I know that he loved to see me run," she says, using his memory as fuel for her athletic pursuits.
Beyond the Track: Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Karmiah aspires to become an entertainment lawyer, leveraging her skills in argumentation and her passion for helping others. She plans to study law while pursuing a professional track career, aiming to balance both worlds effectively.
Navigating NIL Deals and Professional Ambitions:
Karmiah is also capitalizing on Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals, which she views as crucial for financial support and brand building. She emphasizes the importance of proactive self-branding for athletes seeking similar opportunities. "If you brand yourself properly, you'll get the same opportunities," she advises.
Advice to Her Younger Self:
Reflecting on her journey, Karmiah would tell her younger self to remain confident regardless of challenges. "No matter how bad anything is, just remain confident in myself because it will all play out the way that God has it set for me," she says, underscoring her faith and resilience.
Karmiah Davis's story is one of talent, perseverance, and growth. From her unexpected start in track and field to her current preparations for the SEC Championships, she embodies the spirit of a true athlete.
