 Who is Abby Steiner?

Abby Steiner born November 24, 1999, is an American track and field sprinter. She holds personal records of 10.90 over 100m and 22.02 over 200m.

Steiner holds the indoor 200m American record with a time of 22.09 seconds.

Abby Steiner broke the collegiate record in the 200m for the first time at NCAA Championships in 2021 when she tied Thomas's then-collegiate record of 22.38 for her first national title.

She's already one of the most-decorated athletes in UK Athletics history, but there's one major accomplishment she’s still chasing. Abby Steiner, who is the current American, collegiate, SEC and Kentucky record holder in the indoor 200 meter dash, has never won an outdoor NCAA championship title. That could change this weekend.

Steiner tied the NCAA Championships 200-meter record with a qualifying time of 22.05Q (+0.5) while also qualifying for the 100m final with a sub-11-second semifinal time and running a great second leg in the 4x100m relay heats. Both runs were personal bests for Steiner.

Outdoor

  • Won four medals at SEC Championships: gold in the 4x400m (3:21.93), silver in the 200m (22.09), silver in the 100m (11.02), silver in the 4x100m (42.63) 

  • Ran in collegiate record 4x400m relay at SEC Championships (3:21.93) 

  • Ran the third fastest 200m in collegiate history (22.05) at the Kentucky Invitational 

  • Ran an outdoor 200m personal best of 22.38 into a 5.6 m/s headwind for a win and the fastest 200m in collegiate history with a headwind over 1.7 m/s at the Joe May Invitational 

  • Broke the 100m school record with a wind-legal time of 10.92 at the Joe May Invitational, which was also the fifth fastest in collegiate history 

  • Ran for a personal best (11.10) in the 100m at Florida Relays, an event she hadn’t run in three years, becoming the fourth fastest in UKTF history in the event 

Indoor 

  • Defended her 200m national title with a 22.16 run, an NCAA Indoor Championship meet record and Birmingham facility record 

  • Earned silver in the 60m at NCAA Indoor Championships with a school record time of 7.10 

  • Ran in the bronze medal-winning 4x400m relay (3:28.77) 

  • Broke the American record in the 200m (22.09) with her third SEC 200m indoor title in a row, earned bronze in the 60m (7.19), ran in the third fastest collegiate/school record & bronze medal-winning 4x400m (3:25.89) 

  • Qualified for NCAA Championships in the 60m, 200m and 4x400m  

  • Broke the 40-year-old collegiate record in the 300m with a 35.80 run at the Cardinal Classic 

  • Broke her previous collegiate record of 22.38 with a 22.37 run at the Tiger Paw Invitational 

  • Ran in the school record 4x400m relay (3:27.27) at the Tiger Paw Invitational. The relay is the fourth fastest in collegiate history 

  • Tied the school record in the 60m (7.12) at the Tiger Paw Invitational 

  • Won the 200m with a time of 22.58 at the Jim Green Invitational and was a member of the winning 4x400m relay 

  • Earned a personal best and third-best all-time time for UK in the 60m (7.17) and finished second in the race, was the second leg of the new school record 4x400m relay (3:28.62) at Texas Tech 

2020-21 (Junior) 
Indoor 

  • NCAA champion in the 200-meter dash 

  • Won the gold medal with a time of 22.38 seconds that tied the all-time NCAA indoor record (also 22.38 by Gabby Thomas of Harvard) 

  • Tied the second-fastest indoor 200 in United States history 

  • Tied the fifth-fastest indoor 200 in world history 

  • Broke her own Southeastern Conference record set just two weeks prior 

  • Broke the facility record at the Randal Tyson Center in Fayetteville, Ark. 

  • Capped an incredible indoor season in which she won all five 200m events, resetting her personal best at each meet 

  • Began the winter season with an indoor PB of 22.83 in winning the McCravy-Green Invitational 

  • Set another indoor PB in winning the South Carolina Invitational at 22.69 

  • Followed a victorious 22.52 PB at the Tiger Paw Invite 

  • Broke the SEC record with 22.41 seconds in the SEC preliminary heat; followed with a gold medal in the finals at 22.50, setting up her NCAA championship performance 

  • Meanwhile, she finished fifth at the SEC Championships in the 60-meter dash and was 15th at the NCAAs in that event 

  • Her personal best of 7.21 seconds in the 60m came at the Tiger Paw Invite, ranking ninth in the nation this season 

  • Also helped UK win the SEC Championships silver medal in the 4x400 relay, part of the school-record time of 3:28.82; UK went on to finish fifth in that relay at the NCAA Championships 

  • First-team All-America for the 200m dash and the 4x400 relay, also receiving second-team All-America for the 60m dash
